Project Description

I was on the AOL Pictures project several times while at AOL. I worked on different phases of the product: I worked at the very beginning phases of this product while I was interning with AOL, then later I was Lead Designer for our Walgreens integration feature. I also worked on AOL Public Galleries (the public facing side of AOL Pictures), as well as the desktop shortcut for uploading content to AOL Pictures. Walgreens Integration: We had a limited API for AOL Pictures at the time, so we needed to come up with a way to handle information from the AOL side that would be handed off to Walgreens for prints and other store merchandise. At the same time, we needed to ensure that the experience was smooth even when the user went back and forth between their AOL shopping cart (cached content) and the Walgreens checkout page.

Contribution

I worked on AOL Pictures (formally known as You've Got Pictures) as an intern. The 2nd time back to the project, I took on a more influential role. I worked on different phases of AOL Pictures at different times. My major contribution to the product was the integration between the Walgreens checkout flow and the Public Galleries experience. Internally, we fought hard regarding how to lay down the foundation for Public Galleries. And despite the limitations of our technology at the time, it was a solid product with a clean UI that didn't require too much backend effort.

Learned

AOL Pictures was the first real product where I was able to work with developers on site. I worked with the developers closely whenever problems/questions arose, and walked over to their cubes sometimes to be more efficient than simply emailing, IMing, or calling. This was second nature for me at the time but, later, I learned this actually helped to bridge the functional teams.

Highlights

  • This was my first experience working with a 3rd party company (Walgreens).
